Vastu Shastra is the ancient Indian science of space and direction. You don’t need to rebuild your home to benefit from it. These seven simple, non-demolition Vastu tips can help bring more calm, health and prosperity into your home.
At a glance
- Keep the North-East clean, light and clutter-free.
- Make your main entrance bright, clean and welcoming.
- Place your cash locker so that it opens towards the North.
- Sleep with your head towards the South or East.
1. Keep the North-East (Ishaan) corner pure
The North-East is considered the most sacred zone of the home, linked with water and divine energy. It is the ideal place for your puja room or a quiet meditation corner. Avoid toilets, heavy furniture, shoe racks or storage of unused items here.
2. Make the main entrance welcoming
Vastu calls the entrance the “mouth” of the home, through which energy enters. Keep it well lit, clean and free of broken items. A toran of mango leaves, a nameplate and a Swastik or Om symbol are traditionally placed here to invite positivity.
3. Place your cash locker facing North
North is the direction of Lord Kuber, the treasurer of the Devas. Keep your locker or safe against the South or West wall so that it opens towards the North. Placing a Shree Yantra or Kuber Yantra inside or near the locker is a popular remedy for steady wealth.
4. Keep the centre (Brahmasthan) open
The centre of the home is the Brahmasthan, the energy core of the house. Keep it as open and light as possible. Avoid pillars, heavy furniture or a staircase in the middle of the house.
5. Sleep in the right direction
For the master bedroom, the South-West is considered ideal because it gives stability. Sleep with your head towards the South or East. Sleeping with your head to the North is traditionally avoided.
6. Cook facing East
The kitchen belongs to Agni (fire), so the South-East is its ideal zone. While cooking, try to face East. Keep the stove and the sink apart, because fire and water are opposite elements.
7. Remove clutter and fix what’s broken
Clutter blocks the flow of energy. Repair dripping taps, stopped clocks and cracked mirrors, and give away what you no longer use. This is the simplest Vastu remedy, and it costs nothing.
