Choosing a gemstone is one of the most personal decisions in Vedic astrology. The right ratna is believed to strengthen a helpful planet in your chart; the wrong one can do the opposite. This guide explains how gemstones are chosen, which stone is traditionally linked to each Rashi, and the mistakes to avoid.
Quick answer
Your gemstone is usually chosen from your Moon sign (Rashi) and, more accurately, from your full Kundli: the lord of your Lagna and the planets that rule your 5th and 9th houses. A Rashi-based stone is a good starting point, but a personal chart reading is the safest way to decide.
Why gemstones matter in Jyotish
In Jyotish, each of the nine planets (Navagraha) is linked to a specific gemstone. Wearing that stone in contact with the skin is believed to channel and strengthen the planet’s energy. That is why a stone is recommended only for planets that are favourable in your chart, never for one that is causing trouble.

Rashi stone or Kundli stone?
Your Rashi only tells us where the Moon was at your birth. A complete Kundli shows the position and strength of all nine planets. Two people with the same Rashi can need very different stones. For example, Blue Sapphire may suit one Makara native and be unsuitable for another. That is why astrologers recommend confirming any powerful stone with a chart reading first.
How to wear your gemstone
- Choose a natural, untreated stone with a lab certificate. Heated, glass-filled or synthetic stones are not considered effective.
- Pick the right weight. A common guideline is 1 Ratti for every 10 kg of body weight, but your astrologer may suggest otherwise.
- Set it in the right metal, for example gold for Ruby and Pukhraj, silver for Pearl, and silver or panchdhatu for Neelam.
- Wear it on the right finger and day, usually during Shukla Paksha in the morning.
- Energise it by washing it in Gangajal or raw milk and chanting the planet’s mantra 108 times before wearing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Wearing a stone only because it is “lucky” for your zodiac on the internet.
- Combining stones of planets that are enemies, such as Ruby with Blue Sapphire.
- Buying uncertified stones to save money.
- Wearing Neelam without a 3-day trial.
